A tuner tells you about one note after the fact; a drone teaches your ear in real time. When your pitch is slightly off against a sustained reference you hear beating — a slow wobble that speeds up as you drift further. Adjust until the beating vanishes and you've tuned by ear, which is the skill that transfers to playing with others.
A simple drone routine
Set the drone to the key of the passage you're working on. Play the scale slowly, one bow per note, listening for pure unisons, octaves, and fifths against the drone. Then play the passage itself over the drone at half tempo. Ten minutes of this is worth an hour of unmonitored repetition.
