The cello's C string vibrates at 65.4 Hz, and short analysis windows simply don't contain enough of the waveform to measure it. This tuner uses a longer 4096-sample window with confidence filtering and smoothing, so bow noise, harmonics, and vibrato don't send the needle spinning.
Tuning a cello, in order
Tune A3 (220 Hz) first, then work down: D3, G2, C2. Bow gently near the fingerboard with a full, steady stroke — a crushed sound has a noisy spectrum that any tuner will struggle with. Check fifths by ear afterward: beatless double-stop fifths are the real test.
